Sargassum Blooms
Spanning 13 million tons across the Atlantic and affecting coastlines from Africa to the Americas, the 2024 sargassum bloom highlights the profound impact of human activity and climate change on our environment. Impact of Decomposition
As sargassum decomposes on shores, it releases methane and hydrogen sulfide, worsening climate change and threatening public health through respiratory risks and water contamination. It also disrupts infrastructure and power supply, notably clogging water intake tubes at desalination plants and power stations that rely on seawater for cooling.

Extreme Weather Events
Meanwhile, intensifying hurricanes and extreme weather events fueled by climate change are pushing massive amounts of organic debris into coastal areas, compounding the challenge. Without intervention, these materials will decompose anaerobically in landfills, generating harmful emissions that accelerate global warming.

Organic Waste and Landfills
With organic waste like palm fronds, yard debris, and agricultural residues making up about 33% of landfill content, the need for sustainable green waste management is undeniable. The UN Environment Programme reports that anaerobic decomposition of this waste in landfills accounts for 70% of methane and CO2 emissions generated in the process.
